Dear Don,

I would like to ask you a query about my situation regarding my potential of being a Canadian citizen.

I was born in Maryland, US in 1966. I am now living in the UK since 2003.

My father, who was born in London UK emmigrated to Canada in 1950 and became a Canadian citizen on 8. August 1956, but apparently lost his citizenship because of becoming an American citizen after I was born. I have today a black and white photocopy of his certificate of citizenship which states the number of the certificate and when exactly he became a citizen of Canada.
I have the full length form of my birth certificate, his birth certificate (UK) and I could make the photos for myself.

BUT, I am estranged to my father and it says in the instructions when I am applying for my first certificate of citizenship I need to have either an original, or certified copy of his certificate of citizenship to be successfully achieving this application.

What is to be done in my situation regarding the Canadian High Commission accepting my application with the documents I have in my situation?

I asked my mother if this is the member of parliament that my aunt knows, but it is not. I am still learning about Canadians politics and government. It's quite hard to find material to explain it all without a lot of confusion. Do you recommend any books?

I would love to meet him. I am coming up in April or May with my son. Do you know if he would have to be a landed immigrant for 1 year or 3? Could he retain his USA citizenship? I certainly hope there are some provisions for the kids.

I am doing what I can to make this new law known where I live. I co-host a history show on the radio and we talked about this law because we live near an army base. There could be some here that are affected.

There is also a show down here called The Story with Dick Gordon who is a Canadians himself. He might really be interested in doing a show on this.

I am eager to help if there is anything I can do!

Welcome Don! I am really glad you are here and I cannot believe your tenacity!

I noticed you did something in Waterloo with the Mennonite Central Commitee? Do you know Dorothy Sherk?

I will be moving up to Waterloo. I would love to go to Ottowa but it is too far.

Thank you again. You will have allowed many of us to live lives that we could not otherwise live.

Hello,
Since I was born in Detroit and (at least as a child) visited relatives in Ontario more than I ever traveled to a different state, I never felt Canada was "foreign" - yet I never thought I could claim Canadian citizenship as a natural part of my heritage. I am a US citizen descended from Canadian-born parents who became naturalized US citizens. Ever since I first started looking into my possible Canadian citizenship back in 2007, I discovered the truly unfair and strange situation that exists "under law" and affects the "Lost Canadians". And I became very aware of how YOU have been instrumental in causing awareness, culminating in the current changes that benefit many or at least some of us. Personally, the change will have more mental and emotional benefit than social ( I am 61, after all), but some of the case histories are truly tragic and should NEVER have happened in any advanced democratically oriented nation like Canada. I applaud and thank you for all the effort you have expended in pushing CIC to promote Bill C-37 (and perhaps an improved law in the future).
Thank You, Mr. Don Chapman!
